How Long Do Refrigerators Last? What Gets Counted, and What Gets Left Out

Standard household refrigerators last about 13 years and compact models about 9, according to the National Association of Home Builders' Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components; ENERGY STAR assumes a 12-year product lifetime in its savings calculations. Read those numbers for what they are: they measure how long a refrigerator stays in service before replacement, and replacement includes remodels, style changes, and moves. They do not measure when the machine stops working. Simple top-freezers with clean coils and a tight door gasket routinely run past 20 years, while French-door units with in-door ice makers are the most service-prone configuration in Yale Appliance's service data.

Where the 13-year figure actually comes from

Nearly every lifespan article traces back to one document. In the summer of 2006, NAHB ran a telephone survey of manufacturers, trade associations, and researchers and published the results as the Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components, sponsored by Bank of America Home Equity. Its table is more granular than the headline: standard refrigerators at 13 years, compacts at 9, standalone freezers at 11.

The study also states plainly what its own number includes. In NAHB's words, "appliances are often replaced long before they are worn out because changes in styling, technology and consumer preferences make newer products more desirable." That sentence is the whole ballgame, and almost nobody quotes it.

What the average leaves out

The 13-year figure is a replacement statistic wearing a failure statistic's clothes. It counts the perfectly functional 1998 side-by-side that left the kitchen because the new cabinets were 36 inches deep. It does not separate the cabinet dying from a $90 part dying.

It also leaves out the second life. Refrigerators pulled from kitchens often go to a garage and run another decade with nobody logging the date. My running joke on this beat is that vintage appliances only become indestructible after their owners forget every repair receipt, which is really a statement about survivorship: the units still humming at estate sales are the ones that got repaired, and the repairs left no paper trail.

Until about 2019 I told people a 13-year-old refrigerator was on borrowed time and they should budget for a replacement. I stopped after a few years of recording serial-plate dates on the units I inspected. The survivors skewed hard toward simple machines: single-speed compressors, manual or timer defrost, no in-door dispenser, no board managing airflow. The 1987 chest freezer I keep as a comparison case has had one part replaced, a gasket, in 2011. It has no fan, no board, and no ice maker, which is the entire reason it is still here. Age was never the variable that mattered. Part count was.

Find your refrigerator's real age before you decide anything

Every repair-or-replace decision runs on the manufacture date, and homeowners routinely guess it wrong by five years. The rating plate carries the model and serial numbers. On GE-family refrigerators it sits inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on a side wall near the top, on the ceiling near the front, or behind the crisper drawers.

Use the serial number, never the model number, to date the unit. GE states the rule directly: "The first letter identifies the month. The second letter identifies the year." GE also publishes the catch: "The letter that corresponds with the year, the 2nd letter, rotates approximately every 12 years, so some serial numbers may point to different years." A serial beginning GA is April 2001 or April 2013, and the two answers lead to opposite decisions.

Break the tie with the owner's manual print date, usually on the front or back page next to a publication number, formatted like 04/17. Then check the warranty window before booking anything. Whirlpool's refrigeration limited warranty covers the whole appliance for one year, then the sealed refrigeration system, naming the compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer, and connecting tubing, through the fifth year.

Two temperatures and one run-time percentage tell you if it is still working

The FDA sets the safety numbers: keep the fresh-food compartment at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F. The Department of Energy's appliance guidance narrows the fresh-food band to 37°F to 40°F for efficiency, which sits inside the FDA ceiling rather than contradicting it. Use a standalone appliance thermometer, because most digital displays report the set point you selected, not the measured air temperature.

Run time surprises people more than temperature does. GE Appliances states that refrigerator and freezer compressors are "designed to run 80% to 90% of the time," and that in hot, humid conditions run time can approach 100 percent. A refrigerator that seems to run constantly is usually behaving as designed. GE also notes the compressor stops during automatic defrost regardless of thermostat setting, typically for about 35 minutes.

The abnormal case is the combination: cabinet above 40°F, freezer above 0°F, and the compressor running continuously anyway. That machine is trying and failing.

Gasket or fan, or sealed system? This is the comparison that decides the repair

Brand-to-brand lifespan charts are close to useless once you have a quote in your hand. Failure type decides the money: two of these three faults are ordinary parts work, and the third is a different category of job.

For the gasket, DOE appliance guidance spells out the test: "Door seals should be airtight. To test them, close the door on a single sheet of paper and try to pull it out. If it slides out easily, the gasket needs to be replaced." Check at least eight points per door, corners included, since corners fail first. The test is pass/fail, and it cannot distinguish a worn gasket from a door sagging on its hinges. Clean the seal and retest before ordering a part.

The sealed system is a legal category as much as a technical one. EPA regulations under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require certification for anyone whose work could breach the refrigerant circuit, and household refrigerators fall under Type I as small appliances holding five pounds of refrigerant or less. That requirement, plus recovery, leak detection, evacuation, and recharge, is why the cost sits in a different bracket than a fan motor.

One caution I earned the hard way. Years ago I told a family their compressor was finished on a mid-1990s side-by-side because it hummed and shut off. The compressor was fine; the start relay had failed, a part listing under $40. They had already ordered a replacement by the time I tested it properly, roughly $1,100 they did not need to spend. A compressor that will not start sounds identical to one that is dead.

I should mark the edge of what I can tell you. I cannot vouch for how a 2023 French-door unit with a variable-speed inverter compressor and a Wi-Fi board will look at year 20, because no such unit has reached year 20. What I can vouch for is the 1985 to 2005 range: those machines fail at fans, relays, timers, and gaskets far more often than at the compressor.

What a repair is worth on a 10-to-15-year-old refrigerator

The appliance trade runs on a rule of thumb, not a standard: if the quote exceeds about half the price of a comparable new unit, replace it. Treat that as a starting point weighted against age. A $200 fan motor on a 12-year-old top-freezer is easy arithmetic. A $1,400 sealed-system quote on the same cabinet is not.

The strongest argument against keeping an older refrigerator alive comes from the meter rather than the repair bill. ENERGY STAR gives a unit over 15 years old an annual running cost near $95 and rates old refrigerators at about 20 percent more energy than a current certified model, a penalty that compounds every year on an appliance that never switches off. I grant all of it. A garage second fridge from the 1990s is often the most expensive appliance in the house.

What the energy argument cannot do is rescue an $1,800 replacement from a $180 repair, since $95 a year takes a long time to pay back a new unit. DOE also finalized new efficiency standards for residential refrigerators in January 2024, with compliance due January 31, 2029 or 2030 depending on product class. The machine you can buy in 2030 is not the one on the floor today.

Brand data deserves the same skepticism. Yale Appliance's 2026 reliability report, built from 33,190 first-year service calls, puts LG linear compressor failures at roughly 1.1 percent within five years across more than 160,000 calls, an ordinary rate for the category.

Maintenance that actually changes the number

Two jobs carry nearly all the measurable benefit. DOE guidance states that "regular cleaning of the condenser coils every six to twelve months can improve the efficiency by as much as 30 percent," with a caution to avoid damaging them. The second is the gasket: wash it with mild detergent, retest with paper, replace it when it fails clean.

Everything else is placement and load: clear of ovens and direct sun, a few inches of airflow behind, and reasonably full, since the mass of cold food buffers each door opening and buys you time in an outage.

Is a 10-year-old refrigerator worth fixing?

Usually yes, if the fault sits outside the sealed system. A gasket, fan motor, thermostat, or start relay runs roughly $75 to $400 installed against a $1,200-plus replacement. A compressor or refrigerant leak quoted at $500 to $1,500 on a 10-year-old cabinet is where most owners should buy new instead.
