How Heavy Can a Ballast in a Car Be? Four Rulebooks, Four Answers
No sanctioning body publishes a universal maximum ballast weight, and the rulebooks a North American club racer is most likely to be handed set the ceiling in four incompatible ways. The National Auto Sport Association's 2026 Super Touring rules for ST1 through ST6 permit "up to three hundred (300) lbs. of added ballast." NHRA's Factory Stock Showdown writes no ballast cap at all and instead sets a total-vehicle maximum weight of 3,600 pounds against class minimums between 3,450 and 3,525 pounds. NASA's Club Codes and Regulations 15.20, the default for every NASA class that does not override it, names no mass limit whatsoever: it requires solid metal, "a minimum of five (5) pounds per piece," through-bolts with fender washers and a locking-nut system, and grade five bolts throughout. The Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs permits ballast "as required to meet minimum weight" with no cap, provided it sits within the coachwork and "serves no other purpose." Technical inspection judges material, segment size, location and retention. Total mass is what those four produce, and it is not itself the rule.
The universal maximum racers search for does not exist
Confident figures circulate: fifty pounds, three hundred and fifty, whatever somebody's friend heard at a track. Each is usually true somewhere, which is why the search returns contradictions.
NHRA's Factory X specifications, published in the sanctioning body's 2023-to-2024 rule amendments, carry the sharpest illustration. The class does set a hard ballast number, and it is tied to a place rather than to the car: "Any ballast mounted on, or in front of, forward crossmember is limited to 30 pounds maximum, including bracket." Move the same lead behind that crossmember and the 30-pound figure stops applying. The rule also bars mounting ballast higher than the top of the wheel tubs and prohibits "disguised ballast," including solid tubing welded to the chassis above the rear wheel tubs.
The target itself is not fixed. NASA's 2026 Spec Miata rules state that "minimum weights are subject to change amid the season to adjust for competition." NHRA attaches the same warning to Factory Stock Showdown and Factory X, reserving the right to adjust minimum weights "at any time to control performance and maintain parity within the category."
Ballast is a lever the organiser pulls. SCCA's B-Spec advisory committee, in minutes published in the January 2026 Fastrack, wrote that permitting an extra power part would be "objectively absurd" for "a vehicle that is required to race with a restrictor plate AND hundreds of pounds of ballast."
That is where a bad result separates from bad luck. A car that arrives at post-session weighing under its class minimum did not suffer misfortune. Somewhere there is a rulebook version, a bulletin, a scale ticket or a fuel load behind it.
What "minimum competition weight" actually measures
Three variables are normally decided by the rule rather than the builder: whether the driver is aboard, what fuel is in the car, and when the weighing happens.
Driver inclusion is usually explicit. NASA's 2026 Spec MX-5 rules give one line: "Minimum Weight (with driver): 2,525 lbs." NHRA's rule amendments repeat the convention for Factory X, stating that "all minimum weights listed above include driver."
Fuel is handled by timing rather than by a stated level. The Midwestern Council's 2026 General Competition Rules require every car to meet or exceed the minimum "exactly as they come off the race circuit," weighed on certified event scales that stay available to competitors throughout the meeting. SCCA's General Competition Rules carry the same wording. There is no topping up, so a car that clears minimum on the grid can be light at the flag because it burned the difference.
That is what "fuel as ballast" means in practice. Fuel aboard counts toward the number, which makes fuel load a planning variable. It cannot be the ballast. NASA's 2026 Super Touring rules require ballast to be "of solid material (no fluids or shot pellets)." Writing in NASA Speed News, Rob Krider recorded a SpecE30 competitor who filled a permitted spare tire with water; the practice was afterwards made illegal in that class.
A single rulebook can also carry two definitions of weight for two purposes. SCCA's General Competition Rules size roll cage tubing by a vehicle weight expressly "as raced without fuel and driver," while the minimum-weight rule in the same book is measured with the driver, as the car leaves the track.
The target can move with a tire choice. Club Racing Board minutes of 2 December 2025, creating the Rush Sports Racer class, set the minimum at 1,350 pounds on Nankang AR-1 tires and 1,325 pounds on Hoosier W3 wets. A 25-pound swing arrives with the weather.
Where the rulebook lets the weight sit
Location rules are frequently stricter than mass rules, and they force a builder to plan before drilling.
NASA's Spec Miata rules confine ballast to the passenger side: every piece "must be bolted within the passenger compartment, through the floor pan on the passenger side of the cockpit," or secured using all four Mazda passenger seat mounting bolt holes. Spec MX-5 removes the drilling option, mounting ballast to a base plate through the factory passenger seat holes, because rule 11.2.4 states that "holes are not permitted to be drilled in the floor pan to mount ballast."
The Midwestern Council's B-Spec rules govern segment size instead of position, requiring ballast "in segments no lighter than ten (10) pounds and no heavier than fifty (50) pounds." SCCA's new Rush Sports Racer class restricts attachment to the chassis flat bar rails fore and aft of the driver's seat, then adds a requirement unrelated to physics: ballast "must be clearly marked with the car number and must be positioned to maintain proper weight distribution."
Retention is the safety rule, and it is written in bolts
The fear that sends racers searching for a maximum weight is real. Rulebooks address it through fastener specifications rather than a mass limit.

The arithmetic between two rows is instructive. NHRA demands at least four 3/8-inch Grade 8 bolts for a bracket holding up to 30 pounds ahead of the front crossmember. The Performance Touring formula quoted by NASA Speed News in 2015 asked for one 3/8-inch grade-5 bolt, two fender washers and a locking nut per fifteen pounds, which puts two bolts under the same 30 pounds. The drag-racing rule requires double the fastener cross-section for identical mass in the position most exposed in a frontal impact.
Ken Myers, a NASA technical inspector and the owner of I/O Port Racing Supplies, told NASA Speed News that inspectors typically enforce the Performance Touring wording across all classes because it is the stated "preferred method," and that the failure he sees most often is a single bolt run through a weight. That rule set has since been folded into Super Touring, where the 2026 cap reads 300 pounds, so a 2015 article now describes a class that no longer exists.
Compliance ballast and corner-balance ballast are two different jobs
Both add mass, and racers routinely treat them as one task. They answer different authorities.
Compliance ballast answers a published number. Target, permitted locations and hardware are fixed by the class rules and verified by an inspector who will not negotiate.
Corner-balance ballast answers four numbers on a set of scales. Don Alexander, author of Motorbooks' High-Performance Handling for Street or Track, defines the measurement in Grassroots Motorsports as "the weight resting on each tire contact patch with the car at rest, exactly the way it will be raced," meaning the driver in the seat, fluids topped up, and a fuel load chosen for the point in the race where balance matters. Left-side percentage is left front plus left rear over the total; cross weight is right front plus left rear over the total. For road racing and autocross Alexander puts the target for both at 50 percent, with cross weight held very close to it.
The two jobs constrain each other. Alexander's central point is that ride height cannot substitute for mass: "The only way to change the static weight distribution percentages is to physically move weight around in the car. Jacking weight will not alter the left side or the rear percentages." A Spec Miata driver who wants left-side weight to offset a heavy driver cannot get it from ballast, because the class rule permits ballast only on the passenger side. The rulebook wins, and the setup work has to happen elsewhere in the car.
Ballast also makes a poor answer to a handling complaint. Alexander's procedure calls for a level floor with shims under the scale pads, tire pressures set first, anti-roll bars and shocks disconnected where possible, and each corner bounced to free the suspension from bind. Numbers taken without those steps describe the garage floor.
Formula 1 practice imports badly for the same reason. An F1 team distributes ballast inside a homologated survival cell designed around it, against one minimum weight covering the whole grid. A club car has a class-specific minimum, a production floor pan, and a rulebook naming which seat bolt holes are legal.
Material is the last decision, not the first
Density determines how much room a given mass occupies. It settles nothing about legality.

Sources differ at both ends of that table. NIST's composition data lists lead at 11.35 g/cm³ while engineering references standardise on 11.34, a gap under 0.1 percent and worth about a fifth of a cubic inch across a 100-pound block. On tungsten, Elmet Technologies publishes ASTM B777 Class 1 at a nominal 17 g/cm³ with 90 percent tungsten, while other suppliers advertise B777 ranges starting at 16.85 g/cm³ and treat that as a minimum rather than a nominal value. Neither disagreement changes what an inspector checks.
The material clause in CCR 15.20 is broader than most racers expect: ballast "shall be solid metal such as steel, lead, or depleted uranium." Rulebooks regulate what stays bolted to the car and say nothing about what the metal does to the person cutting it. Occupational exposure to lead falls under OSHA's standard at 29 CFR 1910.1025, which sets a permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms per cubic metre of air over eight hours and an action level of 30 micrograms, and which is written for workplaces rather than home garages. Drilling, sawing and grinding generate the dust. A tech inspection sheet has no line for it.
What to bring to technical inspection
This sequence is what turns an unexplained failure into a diagnosable one.
- Print the exact rulebook version being run, plus supplemental regulations and any later bulletin. SCCA revises its General Competition Rules monthly through Fastrack, and NASA reached its 2026.3 CCR edition on 28 April.
- Weigh the car on certified scales in full race trim, driver aboard, in the fuel condition the rule specifies.
- Subtract that figure from the published class minimum. The difference is the ballast, and it needs margin: CCR 17.8 grants a 5.0-pound leeway at an event's first weighing and zero afterwards.
- Read the location rule before drilling, because several classes forbid the hole rather than the weight.
- Build to the retention specification one segment at a time, with new lock nuts. CCR 15.20 states that Nylock or metal crimping lock nuts should not be reused.
- Have the inspector see the installation before the session rather than in impound.
NHRA does not publish its current rulebook free; it is sold through the member store and retailers. Third-party reprints of its General Regulations circulate with conflicting ballast caps, one giving 300 pounds and another 500. Neither can be settled by searching, which is the difficulty a racer meets whenever the first question asked is how heavy the block may be.
